How Does Hair Transplant Work?

Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that moves individual hair follicles from a part of the body called the donor site to bald or balding parts of the body known as the recipient site. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness, where grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted to the bald scalp.

How Does Hair Transplant Work?

The Scandinavian Institute of Oslos difference:

Consultation and Planning:

Initially, a thorough consultation is conducted to assess the patient's goals, understand their expectations, and plan the procedure. Flights are booked, and you arrive in Oslo, Norway. The surgeon sees your scalp and maps out the recipient area to design a natural-looking hairline.

How are Donor Areas Selected?

The back of the head is usually the donor site as the hair follicles here are resistant to the hormone DHT, which causes hair loss. The quality and quantity of donor hair are critical factors in determining the success of the transplant.

What are the Hair Transplant Harvesting Methods?

There are two main methods of extraction: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

FUT: This method involves removing a strip of skin from the donor area, from which individual follicular units are then dissected under a microscope.

FUE: In FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted directly from the scalp using a specialized punch device.

How do you Prepare your Scalp for Grafts?

After extraction, hair follicles are prepared into grafts. In FUT, microscopic dissection is used to create grafts, while in FUE, the grafts are ready post-extraction.

Recipient Site Creation:

Small incisions are made in the recipient area in the direction and angle that mimic natural hair growth.

Transplantation:

The prepared grafts are then delicately placed into the incisions by the surgeon. This step requires skill to ensure a natural-looking hair density and pattern.

What is Recovery like After Hair Transplant?

Post-operative care involves protecting the scalp from the sun and following a regimen of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications to prevent infection and swelling. The transplanted hair will fall out after a few weeks — this is normal.

New Hair Growth Process?

New hair growth should be visible after several months, with the final results typically being evident after one year.

What are the risks of a Hair Transplant?

Risks include infection, scarring, and an unnatural-looking hairline if not done properly. It's crucial for patients to have realistic expectations and understand that the results vary based on individual factors such as hair color, texture, and density. That’s why it's important to choose an experienced and qualified surgeon to ensure the best outcome.
